Alternative mental health support and training for schools

We wanted to update you on how we plan to support schools and settings during this difficult time.

As well as the general resources and self-help app details we have offered to schools already, we are also able to offer the following should you need it:

  • Online or telephone counselling for children and young people (where suitable), parents and staff
  • Face to face support for the above if/when the lockdown rules are lifted with extra safeguards in place
  • Informal checking-in calls with students, parents and staff
  • Staff supervision via video conference or telephone
  • Resilience programmes or online resources to give to children and young people
  • Free online resources through our ongoing national campaigns IAMWHOLE and BeREAL

In addition, the Young Minds Coronavirus report (2,359KB, PDF) shows what young people are saying about the impact of COVID-19 on their mental health, and how important it is to continue support wherever possible.

Training Programmes

Whilst our face to face courses have been postponed until further notice, we are now busy looking at alternative ways of supporting schools, in a time where awareness of needs and confidence in working with young people and families is even more important.  Here is what we are doing:

  • Offering our existing courses for the rest of the academic year online via video conferencing – these should be available from May. View our latest calendar. Please note: dates may change for the summer term, and ignore the listed venues. Therefore, you can book any of the courses now and we will let you know when they are taking place
  • Provide access to free Level 2 accredited online courses to any school that has previously booked training with us. These are available to both staff and parents and are offered on a first come first served basis. Visit our Level 2 distance learning core training page for details.
  • Offering tailored courses via video conferencing and webinars for individual schools or groups of schools on a whole range of topics. Of particular interest during this time, might be our Mentoring or Delivering Early Interventions training as they will give you the tools and resources to work with vulnerable young people whilst they cannot access clinical support. See the attached brochure for details.

2020/21 Calendar

We are sure that schools and organisations will be continuing to plan programmes for next year, and so we are proud to launch our new calendar of programmes, which you can book now, by visiting our events and resources page. Our training is based on an approved competency framework for schools with the 2020/21 programme including a number of new workshops and courses in response to local need and emerging research. These include:

  • Eating Disorders – a one day course to help schools better understand eating disorders, delivered by our inspirational trainer who has a lived experience.
  • Train The Trainer Courses:
    • Delivering Parent & Student Workshops – a one day course to enable you to run your own awareness workshops using evidence based resources
    • Delivering the Young Health Champions Level 1 Award – a one day course showing you how to deliver our accredited award to enable peer support programmes to be developed in your setting
  • Level 2 Award in Student First Aid (11+) – a new 3 hour programme allowing schools to meet the new statutory requirements for 2020/21. We also have a Mini Medics course for 7—11 year olds. First Aid Training flyer (800KB, PDF)

To help in these challenging times, we are offering a 15% discount to any setting that books one of our new or existing courses before 30 June 2020; simply quote ‘MH15’ when booking.
