Mentoring Children and Young People: A Solution Focused Approach

Mentoring skills can help you effectively support children and young adults in a 1-to-1 basis and in a non-therapeutic way. Using current theory, it focuses on how motivational interviewing and solution focused approaches can be useful in situations ranging for reaching potential to coping with the everyday. Motivational Interviewing and Solution Focused Approaches can significantly improve outcomes for those that are at risk of developing mental health issues and help re-engage young people who struggle to make positive changes.

 

Course Summary

This one day course gives settings the opportunity to learn from mental health professionals about how they can apply theory to supporting young people on a 1-to-1 basis in a nontherapeutic way. This one day programme will give adults skills, tools and resources based on tried and tested methods used in our 1-to-1 mentoring programmes. It will give staff skills, tools and resources based on tried and tested methods used in our 1-to-1 mentoring programmes, and covers the following: Defining Mentoring, Motivational Interviewing and Solution Focused Approaches, Active Listening, Goal Setting and Measuring Impact.

  • To explore theories underpinning mentoring and practice active listening skills
  • To understand the stages of change model
  • To build on and develop mentoring theory by looking at solution focused theory and techniques
  • To practice application of knowledge and skills.
  • To develop knowledge and skills through observed feedback and discussion
