Feeling stressed about ‘Results Day’?
After weeks of nervously waiting in anticipation, results day is nearly here.
We know receiving your results can seem like a particularly stressful time, no matter if it’s for GCSE or A-Level.
It’s important to note that stress is completely normal and something most students go through, but there are several things you can do to help.
So, with the help of Alistair Young, our Clinical Operations Manager, we’ve outlined some handy tips on how to keep calm and stay as relaxed as possible for the big occasion.
Do something you enjoy the night before
Try not to let thinking about your results take over your sleep. A good way to relax and take your mind off things is to do something you enjoy doing the night before. Whether it’s spending time with family, playing your favourite video game, or watching a movie, keeping your mind occupied will keep you busy and distracted from stress.
Don’t compete or compare your results with others
It’s been a year like no other so the last thing you want to be doing is dwelling on other students’ results or wondering ‘what if’. There can also be a lot of pressure to open envelopes at the same time and share what you got with everyone, but that doesn’t mean you need to do this too. Alternatively, you could collect your results and open them at home, or even have them emailed to you.
Take a moment to yourself
After you’ve learned what results you’ve achieved, be sure to take a moment for yourself. Reflect on the year, acknowledge your thoughts and feelings, and take a few deep breaths. Remember, whatever the grades, find a way to celebrate your success – it’s been a crazy year and you deserve happiness.
Practice mindfulness
If you do start to feel overwhelmed or anxious, you can practice the ‘Five Senses Exercise’ to help relax both brain and body. The goal is to calm your mind by using your five senses to focus on your environment instead of your thoughts.
- First, see if you can notice five things that you can see.
- Second, notice four things you can feel.
- Third, notice three things that you can hear.
- Fourth, notice two things you can smell.
- Finally, notice one thing you can taste.
You are what matters – not the grade
Last but by no means least, remember your results do not define you. Lord Alan Sugar, Rihanna, Richard Branson and even Bill Gates failed at some point in school but look at them now… And, after a truly unprecedented couple of years, you have already succeeded by just being you!
All that’s left to say is good luck! You’ve done your best and that’s all that matters, so stay positive and enjoy your well-earned summer.
