RAF Wittering Airplay News

Sharon Pollard (Station Youth Worker at Airplay) has given us this update on some exciting things that have been happening at RAF Wittering:

Four members of our RAF Wittering Airplay Youth Committee, ‘Project Tuesday’ joined young people from other Airplay stations around the UK at the Airplay Annual Youth Forum in London, this is an event aimed at those young people aged 12 – 17 who are fully engaged in their local Airplay Youth Support Project.

The participants who were selected to attend undertook workshops around key issues and then were supported to summarise their findings with representatives from the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund.

This is a great opportunity for young people from serving or ex-serving military backgrounds to come together, represent their peers and have a voice within the project that is heard at a national level by the Royal Air Force, YMCA and the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund.

An exciting new project has been developed by the young people who attended and more on this will be revealed soon. Watch this space!

RAF Wittering MT kindly dropped us at Peterborough, and we travelled by train.

Once in London young people and staff used the London Underground network to navigate the city, a new experience for some of our young people.

We stayed in 4 apartments within the Union Jack Club. All the apartments had stunning views of London, as shown in the photos, and sleep up to six people.

Each had a fully equipped kitchen. This experience was about developing young people’s self-esteem and independence in a safe environment and as such the young people were given a budget, shopped, and cooked for themselves. A fabulous success as you can see!

It wasn’t all work though, we also had a chance to experience more amazing views on the London Eye, check out the graffiti art at the Leake Street tunnel, have a look around the Lego store and M & M world and eat out at Bella Italia.

Our young people stated they felt that their voices had been heard, had a great time reconnecting with old friends and making new ones, had the best time and would love to go again.
On a more local level, two members of our committee recently attended the local Children and Young Peoples board meeting, in fact one co-chaired with Mark Davis – CDO. Another great opportunity to have their voices and opinions heard and to get involved in the community.

Well done Project Tuesday !

Other members of Wittering Airplay enjoyed a Halloween party, Halloween games, and half term trip to Rumble Live at Grafham Water. Laser guns, a wood, mud! What more do you need? A brilliant time was had by all, and it turns out I’m a pretty good shot too!
